Three Dice Project: Eternal Metamorphosis
My Dice are Digital Drawing & Painting, Printmaking, and Experience. I decided to use AI tools to create a painting, and use a laser cutter to cut out the painting, then print it onto paper using printmaking techniques. For Experience, I use it as the theme of the painting.
To start the project, I used Midjourney to generate this painting that reflects my experiences and recent thoughts. I feel like everything around us is constantly changing, evolving, and transforming—whether it’s new technologies like AI, new media, or even us as individuals and the way we live. Through my studies and experiences in exploring creative tech for past several months, I realized the importance of embracing new technologies and the future. That’s why I want to use the butterfly in metamorphosis as a metaphor to symbolize transformation. The transformation of our personal growth, of technological evolution, and of our era.
I adjusted the image in Illustrator and then used a laser cutter to cut it out on a MDF board.
After that I used materials in Thingspace to mimic the process of woodblock printmaking. I applied paint on the back of the MDF board, covered it with paper, and used a roller to transfer the paint or ink onto the paper.
I made three outcomes for this project.
The mold can be reused again and again, so people can experiment with different materials.
This one is the most basic version of the printmaking.
This one is the test version. I started with silver acrylic paint, but it did not transfer well, so I added ink and print it again. Even though it has a lot of uncertainties and unexpected dots in this painting, this one is still my favorite one so far.
After finishing the printmaking, I wanted to try making the image move. I used an image-to-video AI platform to make the butterfly flap its wings and combined it with elements like clouds, time, and the universe. However, it is still a prototype for now.
