Scanography

Project 1: The Finale of a Rose

This scanography series is themed around roses. Throughout the scanning process, I experimented with different ways, such as moving the rose to evoke a sense of dancing and arranging the petals to express the feeling of wilting. The entire work tells the story of a rose, from its wild dance, to its withering, burial, and eventual rebirth.

Project 2: The Waves of Hats

The main material for this set of scanography works is hats. In the two scanographies on the left, I gently shook the hats from side to side during scanning, creating a sense of flow and a glitch effect. In the two images on the right, I combined two types of hats and shook them up and down during scanning, resulting in a shape looking like a human face.

My Reflection on Scanography:

While scanning, I selected a few materials from my room to bring to the scanner. I took some roses from the vase on my desk and my most frequently worn accessory from the closet—hats. I want to reconsider those everyday objects around me. By positioning the roses in various ways during the scanning procsess, I created a play about a poignant rose. Through the placement and movement of the hats, I transformed these ordinary items into something fluid, and I also reshaped them into different forms. I find that scanography is a simple and convenient way of creating, allowing us to view everyday objects and materials from a fresh perspective, turning them into a piece of art or a story.

  1. Hello Megan, I am captivated by your innovative approach in blending organic elements with a touch of digital transformation. Your experiments with the rose are particularly striking, especially the way you move the petals to capture dynamic, almost technological effects that make the natural forms feel alive yet slightly surreal. The sense of motion you create, almost as if the rose itself is dancing, adds a lively rhythm to each piece. At the same time, the gradual transition towards wilting and burial is profoundly emotional, suggesting a life cycle that feels both delicate and powerful. This series beautifully tells the story of transformation, from vibrancy to decay and, ultimately, rebirth. It's inspiring to see how you've brought out such a range of expressions from a single rose, turning its life cycle into a dramatic visual narrative.
